STEM Seminar: Climate Emotions and Creative Expression (Session 2/3)

Professional Development on the Social-Emotional Consideration of Teaching Climate Science

Come learn with EarthGen in this virtual professional development opportunity designed for teachers in ESD 189, ESD 121, ESD 113, ESD 114 and ESD 112. While most STEM Seminars look at a local climate impact and support teachers in increasing their content knowledge and prepare them with strategies to bring this work into their classroom, this training is unique in that it focuses heavily on social-emotional learning in regard to climate change. We recognize that identifying and coping with climate emotions is a starting point for taking action and envisioning a different future.

Teachers will gain knowledge about climate change and explore and express the emotions brought up when learning about it. They will also create and follow through on an implementation plan to attend to their students’ emotions with care. It is vital to acknowledge, understand, and work with these emotions in order to identify injustices in our systems, connect with our communities, align with our greater purpose, and be better changemakers.

Teachers will leave this training with increased preparedness to facilitate climate science-focused activities and they will develop an understanding of ways to support students’ social-emotional wellbeing by navigating their climate emotions.
