“Switch it off!” became a common catchphrase at Frontier Middle School this year. Thanks to the leadership of some tenacious 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, this Vancouver-area school is making smarter decisions to conserve energy everyday.
After conducting an audit, the Green Team realized that their school had a major problem about keeping lights and electronics on. With a little creativity and positive reinforcement, these young leaders got the rest of the school community on board to conserve with signage, presentations, and announcements.
They also took their action project one step further. With support from their teacher, Mrs. Gordon, the students connected with Clark County PUD to see whether they could swap their incandescent bulbs with more energy efficient LED alternatives. Success! Now, Frontier is on the path to saving energy through behavioral change and systems improvements.
