Pierce County and EarthGen Host First Climate Student Summit

In partnership with Pierce County, EarthGen hosted the inaugural YESS Climate Student Summit, a day of learning, connection, and action for young climate leaders. Held at Pierce College, the summit welcomed 32 students from four schools: GATES High School, Washington High School, Ford Middle School, and Columbia Crest A-STEM Academy.

Under the summit’s tagline, “Inspiring hope and climate action in our school communities,” students explored their identities, emotions, and the many ways they can make a difference in the face of a changing climate.

A student's hand places an emoji sticker on a poster titled “How do you feel when talking about Climate Change?” The chart features a before-and-after comparison using emoji faces to represent emotional responses ranging from sad to happy.

The day featured three interactive workshops:

  • Climate Emotions & Creative Expression – Students used natural materials and art to reflect on their emotional responses to climate change and express those feelings creatively.
  • No Matter Who You Are: Climate Action for Everyone – Through hands-on activities, students identified their unique values, strengths, and identities to discover how they can contribute to climate solutions.
  • Climate Action Venn Diagram – Based on Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson’s framework, this session guided Green Teams in defining meaningful climate action that aligns with their skills, joy, and the needs of their school communities.

Students engaged deeply with each activity. During the Climate Emotions session, Washington High School student CJ shared, “I put indignation because I am really frustrated by the systems that keep this going.” Fellow student Carah added, “I feel empowered and hopeful because as youth we have so much potential to take charge.”

At lunch, students heard from Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello, who emphasized the importance of youth leadership in local climate action. GATES High School student Menima reflected on the day, saying, “This event inspired me to find new ways to take action and learn more about climate change.”

Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello speaks at a podium during the YESS Climate Student Summit. Behind him is a large screen displaying the summit’s logo and tagline, “Youth Engaged in Sustainable Solutions,” with a description about supporting youth to address local environmental challenges. Students are seated and listening in the foreground.

The YESS Climate Student Summit marks a milestone for student engagement in Pierce County and a powerful start to what’s possible when students are given the space to lead.
