EarthGen co-develops new science unit with teachers and indigenous tribes

EarthGen staff collaborated with the Upper Columbia United Tribes and teachers of indigenous students to co-develop a new high school science unit centered on the unique challenges and cultural significance of salmon in the region. This new unit connects environmental science to the interconnectedness of Northwest watersheds, salmon populations, and the Native people who have lived in and managed these ecosystems for millennia.

Becky Bronstein, EarthGen Program Manager, shares that this co-development process is important because “teachers have been actively involved in the development of the lessons, with their thoughts, feedback, and ideas being incorporated at every step of the process.” The finalized unit will be available to teachers throughout the state at the start of the next school year.

The EarthGen team joined members of the Colville Tribes on the Okanogan River to learn about the relationship between salmon, tribes, and watersheds.
